For starters, all of the recycling items can be put in the same recycling dumpster outside the school, McGoran said.
That's because a machine sorts the recyclables as they are emptied from the dumpster, he added.
In addition, McGoran discussed how students can practice recycling at home.
Plastic bags, aluminum foil and Styrofoam containers are not recyclable, he said, along with some plastic, take-out containers, he said.
McGoran added, “with the increase in volume of online shopping, there are more cardboard boxes to recycle, which is one reason there are larger recycling bins strategically placed throughout the borough.”
He also encouraged students to recycle laundry product containers, newspapers and magazines.
McGoran also said some businesses, such as Best Buy, offer bins for recycling batteries and small electronics inside their stores.
Eleven-year-old Ethan Mates started the recycling efforts at the school in 2014 as a project when he was in fifth grade, he said.
The school now has a recycling dumpster behind the school due to the volume of recyclables he collects from the classrooms.
Mates said he collects paper products for recycling from the classrooms at the end of each day, and places them in a central area for the custodians to put in the dumpster.
“It's more organized this year,” Mates said.
Allison Tepper, 9, noticed one school day last year that everyone was throwing plastic water bottles in the trash, she said.
So Tepper teamed up with her friend, Taylor Ulery, 9, to begin collecting bottles at the end of each day to help the recycling efforts, she said.
“Your goal is to get a bigger recycling dumpster at the school,” McGoran said.
McGoran said that aspiration can be achieved by recycling more products he discussed during his presentation.
Borough Manager Jeff Landy said that if that goal is met, the borough in conjunction with Republic Services, will host a pizza party for student council.
